Grand Ru the Rhemes-Notre-Dame
What is a “Rû”?
It is a little channel of irrigation allowing the water of fusion to reach lawns, fields and land otherwise destined to be sterile. Just as arteries, veins and the capillary vases in our body, these channels convey water to the most extreme outskirts, in order to let the countrymen and farmers living in the mountain exploit every piece of earth, even the most isolated and hardest soil. The maintenance of these channels was ruled by the “corvées”: it refers to the habit of preset working days owed by the beneficiaries of the water supplied by the channel. Therefore all along the “rû” you can find many pedestrian walks together with architectural works for the water distribution, like “reservoirs” and small dams.
